Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

I heard about this place from the Food Network and curious to give it a try during my visit. The pizza was good but I didn't find it exceptional. While the ingredients were fresh, pizza was a bit on the dry side. The bruschetta which was their specialty was also a bit dry and light on flavor. I liked the outdoor seating but it overall it was not worth the price and fell short of expectations.

Amazing pizza (some of the best we have ever had), quality ingredients friendly staff. Will defiantly stop in here again!
(5)nathan r.
Decent pizza, rude staff, pool tables, what the hell else do you want from a pizza place
(3)Sam A.
Hands down THE BEST pizza in Santa Fe. I go there often and the staff is always friendly and they know their pizzas. And call me weird, but I love the artichoke hearts that I have them put on their "signature" The Norm pizza...
(5)ali g.
This pizza is awesome! Go here !!!! Try the new mexican pizza some of the best green chili I have ever had!
(5)Trey G.
I am getting the sense that Guy Fieri will rave about any burger, pizza, or sandwich. We were so excited about the Penny Bruschetta after watching the show. Trust me, there is nothing special about this dish. The cornmeal crusted Pizza on the other hand is pretty good. I agree with other reviewers that it is no NYC pizza but its quite a unique take. I loved the home made sausage on The Norm that we got. Overall, I would not go out of my way to eat at this place. However, if you are in the area and craving some Pizza it maybe worth a shot.
(3)Jarrod L.
If you like California style pizza, you'll like this place (I don't like CA style pizza, but I didn't know that was what they served until I had it in front of me; they make it in an exemplary way). There's a good selection of topings and they have a few non-pizza items too.
(3)Andrew B.
Pretty decent pie. The whole, favorite prices are kind of expensive. The slices are quite reasonable (21 for lg and 2.75 respectively). I had the cheese with feta and green chile with a lemonade. The pizza was pretty good (needed garlic and onion, but that was my fault I picked it). The lemonade was different in a good way. It tasted like they used a different kind of lemon and maybe something extra... I had a bite of my friends "the Texan" and it was decent, but I felt it was lacking depth. I think the sauce needs some improvement. I didn't really care for the crust. It was crunchy like a corn meal type thing, but the info card said NM flour. Confusing to say the least; needless to say, it wasn't as much of a "New York Style" pizza as advertised. I would have been happier if it would have said "Santa Fe Style" because that is what it was. I was torn on what to rate this. It is a good pizza, but the sauce is lacking and it is not as advertised. It just seemed a little lack-luster; all together it just didn't culminate to anything spectacular. It wasn't bad food, but the atmosphere, lack of depth and overall disappointment earned it a 3-star rating.

I love Backroad! Great pizza, great toppings selection, great service and restaurant ambience. The cornmeal crust gives the pizza a unique texture and flavor. Local beers on tap are always enjoyable or a nice glass of wine. The renovated outdoor patio area is gorgeous and a wonderful space to relax and get away from the sometimes too loud children/teens playing pool upstairs. The California is my fav!
(5)Scott K.
Absolutley The BEST...
(5)Maura P.
best pizza in town! the "gerald" is fave: spinach, romas, feta and pesto. awesome! the crust has corn meal which makes it extra crunchy and yummy house made lemonade and ice tea are perfect drinks. they often have live music. check their website for who and when
(5)Nikki B.
Just passing through town on my Harley and had to stop after the review from Guy on DDD. Energy here is great, service awesome! Enjoying a grapefruit sculpin (ipa) before my meal...absolutely wonderful. Pizza and salad arrive...oh so good. If I lived nearby it would be my new pizza joint. Will definitely be back and tell my friends about this place. Thank you it was a great experience!!!
(4)Thomas M.
We went on a Saturday night and experienced a long wait, both when ordering and also when waiting for food to arrive. I'd say the total wait was around 40 minutes. Pizza is OK, although ours was very sloppily made - arrived with a 2" hole in the middle from where the dough was stretched too thin. Also, part of the rim had folded underneath when they slid it in the oven. I've been a pizza maker for over a decade and would consider this a failure - certainly not acceptable for a restaurant and the pie should've been remade, but apparently they don't have the same quality controls as I do.

I should have trusted the Yelp reviews, but I wanted to give this place a shot since it was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives......bad decision. I ordered my pizza online and their online ordering isn't that great. It doesn't give you an option to pick the time you want to pick up your food. You have to submit your order, including paying for it online, and then it tells you how long it will be. So you have no idea when your pizza will be ready until you pay for it and you can't order a few hours ahead. Once I ordered, it said my pizza would be ready in 30 minutes. I ordered the Chicken Chicken Pizza that comes with chicken, mushrooms, feta, and green chiles with a tomato sauce. I showed up 30 minutes after I picked up my pizza and picked it up. I drove 3 minutes back to my hotel and opened my pizza and it was definitely cold. I'm not sure how I show up exactly when I'm told to and I still have a cold pizza. It wasn't warm at all and the cheese wasn't stringy or didn't have any indication that it had been cooked that evening. The taste of the pizza was ok, but I just couldn't get over the fact that I payed $15 for a cold pizza. I will NOT be coming back here again.
(2)Lance B.
Worst experience ever. Way over priced for pizza in a fly infested crap shack with an hour and half wait. What a sham, how they got Santa fe best is beyond me. Must be a dozen people regretting coming here right now. One last note the customer service was crap as well, bunch of punks who would rather spit on you than say hello or thank you.
(1)Nick C.
I will echo what a lot of other reviews have already stated... Wait times seem to be longer than your typical pizza spot (my wait was around 40 mins after ordering.) Once getting the pie (BBQ chicken special,) it was worthy of 3 stars. Overall impression? Meh.
(3)Jools H.
Found this place a few weeks ago by chance. Went in around 9 or so, the pizza was delicious, all freshly made. I give it 3 stars because every single employee there seemed completely pissed about being there. No one smiled, no one asked how our meal was, when we said thank you we barely got a 'you're welcome'. When we finally left, they were closing and we all said thank you and goodbye, I made sure to say how delicious it all was and we got zero response. Pretty lame; the place is cool and the food is good. The people suck.
(3)Vance C.
Great restaurant. Not crowded and awesome flavors and atmosphere. Great place and good prices. Has inside and outside seating. The tea was OK but not great
(5)Anye F.
Generally my husband and I only visit places with a 4 star average but we broke our rule to come here based on my parents' recommendation and just because we kind of collect visits to DDD places. Also, pizza is one of my must-have goods and I hadn't yet found a pizza place I really liked in my favorite town. I am glad I gave Back Road a try because I loved it. I am a connoisseur of all types of pizza; I am not one of those close minded fools that insists that ONLY a NY style or ONLY a Chicago style or ONLY a true Neopolitan can be "real pizza". There are good and bad examples of all the 20+ regional pizza styles we have in the US of A. Back Roads serves a crisp thin crust which is neither limp nor soggy and provides a great substrate for the tangy, delicious sauce (order extra sauce!) and fresh toppings. It isn't a particular style, but it is very good. Though many reviews complained about service we had no issues. The lady who took our order was friendly and our pizza arrived pretty promptly. We sat on the patio enjoying the gorgeous weather and a pet adoption event on site with lots of pooches. Makes me wish we had our dog with us and that he wouldn't have tried to eat someone if we did. Anyway, if I had one complaint it would be that I wasn't wowed by the sausage. It was freshly made but could have used more seasoning. But overall, I would be a regular if I lived here, most definitely.
(5)Maritza K.
Good size pizza, parking, outdoor seating area, and the pizza was better than I expected and as a New Yorker I know that I have to make compromises in this town. But I like it and love how it looks.
(3)Bill D.
Possibly the worst pizza I have ever had. It was so bad even my kids hated it. I live in. Houston but grew up in Boston and I know good pizza. Folks outside Northeast don't know the difference. I showed up at the time I was told that it would be ready and was told that it needed 5 more minutes. 15 minutes later I took my over cooked cardboard pizza back to my family at the hotel. This so called "Bostonian" is a fraud and knows nothing about good pizza. Avoid this place unless you don't want pizza. The atmosphere was nice and the other things on the menu might be good. Good lemonade and beer choices.
(1)Jose M.
The pizza crust is thin but delicious. I just came to this place because it was on TV, but I wasn't disappointed at all. This is a good pizza. The crust and sauce are flavorful and they a good range of fresh and tasty toppings.
(5)Marc M.
I came to eat here with family and I did not feel welcomed. Our waitress was sitting with friends at a table behind us. We asked for our salads as we had been waiting for awhile after ordering. This waitress was giving dirty looks to our table because she wasn't doing her job. Unprofessional and pizza was not worth the money we paid. Service was horrible as well as very rude. Will never go back.
(1)Green Q.
The special (balsamic chicken) was very bland. The service was nice, but not worth the price
(1)Marie S.
Do not order your pizza online! When we went to pick up our pizza the gal at the front says "oh by the way we didn't have all the toppings available that you ordered". They didn't refund the extra topping cost either and my husband didn't want to make a fuss but if I was there I would insisted on a refund just out principle. I mean really?? Anyway, so I just paid $25 for a large pizza, missing two of the toppings and at that, it was extremely average and over salty so I won't be going back anyway. Bleh!
(2)Jenn H.
I had been wanting to try this pizza place since I saw it on DD&D years ago. On my way back to Albuquerque from up north, my friend and I decided to stop in for some pizza. It's practically hidden if you aren't from Santa Fe or familiar with the area. THANK GOD for Map app on my phone. We ordered a medium Green Chili Chicken pizza with feta and two pints, total $28. The place is roomy and has a patio, although we did not sit out there due to an unruly child that kept screaming. The pizza came out and it had a thin cornmeal dusted crust that was crunchy and nice to take a bite from. My friend and I LOVED it! After eating almost the entire pizza, we didn't feel overly full. Its a non-greasy pizza and they use organic/local ingredients. I would like it they used larger pieces of chicken, it was a bit skimpy. Our beers were great and a perfect accompaniment to our food. Service was...blah. No one really seemed to want to be there, maybe because it was a holiday? No smiles, no nothing. That really takes away from my stars, sorry, but crack a smile sometime, you'll see that makes a difference. You also have to bus your own dirty dishes, a bit odd but I guess they don't need to be bothered with all that nonsense. Also, it's EXTREMELY QUIET in there. It was almost unnerving. I felt like I was too loud and had to whisper to my friend. But after being in Red River all weekend, maybe I was just used to all the loud bikers. All in all, food is great. Service and ambiance, not so great = A-ok 3 stars.
(3)Travis W.
Great pizza and a good selection of beer. Feels like a Nice local hangout. Parking is ok we went on a Thursday and were able to find a space.
(5)Todd N.
The selection of food and beverages is great! The wait staff is very friendly. It has both indoor and outdoor seating based upon your preference. The location is odd in parking is a bit limited but it is easy to get to.
(5)Melaya P.
Visiting Santa Fe and my uncle (a local) took me and the family here. The prices seemed normal for Santa Fe (this isn't a cheap town). We hung out upstairs in the pool room. The pizza was delicious. The guys played pool for a long time. It was fun for the adults, and comfortable for the kids. Everyone who works here had an alternative appearance. Lots of visible tattoos and piercings. I actually really admire that. I didn't have issues with staff being rude. They just weren't annoying and breathing down my neck like at other restaurants. They pay the workers here a living wage. That alone is another reason I'd return. We just left our dishes for someone else to buss. My uncle is here a lot and says that's the norm. So I think all the people here claiming they "had" to buss their own tables, may be mistaken. Worth a visit in my opinion.
(4)Holly R.
There are much better gluten-free crusts in Santa Fe than at Backroad. The menu said they use gluten-free flours and make it themselves but it was just paper-thin cheap yellow corn meal crust. Like a hard, chewy, super thin cracker. Toppings we're okay I guess but I would have rather had the pre-made factory frozen gluten-free crust from another pizza spot we go to sometimes for half the price! Really disappointing & expensive. For one medium regular crust & one small gluten free to-go it was $38! Another place downtown costs us that much but it's GOOD and their gluten-free is a perfect doughy thin crust so no one even orders regular crust. Bummer meal from Backroad.
(2)Roberto K.
Fun place and good pizza. And they have the Wednesday special price of $20 - an excellent medium 2 topping pizza and pitcher of craft beer. Note: for 2 people only; if you are alone you won't qualify for the special.
(4)Heather P.
How the heck does this only have three stars?!! My husband and I visited Santa Fe last February and stumbled upon this place thanks to Guy. We had the New Mexican Pizza (with green chili)....let me just say, that we died and went to heaven with this pizza. The crust, toppings, and sauce were divine. The beer we had that was awesome as well. Since then...we crave this style of pizza. There is a restaurant in Colorado that has a decent version of this pizza....but only in second place. My husband and I are returning to Santa Fe next weekend and we will be making a stop to get our fix!
(5)Natsu C.
Yum! My fiancé and I spent a few days in Santa Fe and wanted pizza for dinner one night. Based on yelp reviews it was difficult to pick a pizza place- there were three we had in mind and each of them had a couple of reviews saying THE OTHER place was better. We ended up at Back Road because it was close to where we were staying and we weren't disappointed. The crust is thin and delicious (I usually prefer a thicker crust but this wasn't cracker thin or hard- it was perfect!), and the toppings were awesome. We had a norm pizza, add green chiles on my half, and it was delicious. The corn meal some people complained about added flavor to the pizza, and neither of us thought there was too much. I also had a yummy italian soda. The workers seemed like our sort of people- tatted up and down to earth. If we lived in Santa Fe this would be our pizza joint, and if we ever go back we'll certainly be returning!
(5)Woody F.
Been 10 or 12 times, but it seems the pizza slips each time. Plus they changed the menu and deleted our favorite, though the staff seems confused by that, and also happy to do the 3-meat anyway. The in-house (?) sausage was great, but there is less and less of it on a pizza. The crusts are now paper thin, and that isn't good. They weren't 6 months ago. Maybe they don't have any yeast anymore; all corn meal. I don't fault them for their funky service and table messes; that's in with the tatoos and dogs, though I could do without the regular guy always smoking with his dog, holding court on the patio. So tonight, we're going somewhere else and see if pizza standards are just totally slipping in Santa Fe, or what. Or maybe the Second St. vibe has overwhelmed Back Road. No way should this funky, casual place be getting 5 stars these days. Unless someone is in culture shock from having patronized Round Table for years. The pizza here really isn't very good anymore, and it once was. After the decline at Cafe Cafe (one of the worst restaurant names in Santa Fe, and that's saying something), Back Road was our favorite. No more.
(3)Jeff L.
I have traveled the country and eaten at a lot of places off the beaten path. This by far is the best place I have ever eaten. Everything is fresh, homemade and cooked to order. The ambiance is nice and if I lived in the area I WOULD be a regular here. I am very picky about what and where I eat, this place is something I could never get tired of.
(5)Heather B.
So far, my fav pizza in America! But I've yet to get to NY, San Fran or Chicago...The crust is like a cookie and the sauce has flavor!
(5)Demoe B.
Delicious pizza and an ever better beer menu! They also have 2 pool tables upstairs $1 a game!
(4)Jennie B.
I ordered take out here last Sunday...ordering over the phone went smoothly. Went to pick it up, no problems, came home and opened up the order: 1) Green chile chicken soup -- never ordering this again. Opened the take out container lid to a pool of oil. Even my 6 year old kid found it disgusting that a soup would contain so much grease. It was also a cream based broth, which I have never had in a g.c.c.s. before. Bottom line, it was flavorless and gross. 2) Beet and feta salad -- this was fine. No complaints here, Plenty of beets and fresh spring mixed greens. Dill vinaigrette was lovely and on the side so you can dress it yourself. Standard salad fare. 3) PIZZA -- it is GOOD. If you're coming to a resto named Back Road Pizza, don't F around, and do what I did and order a soup. Order the PIZZA! My only observation is that under the thin crust, there is cornmeal, which I assume helps in the baking process, but there was a lot of blackened burnt cornmeal bits stuck, too. I would think the oven should get cleaned out swiftly before each pie goes in the oven to eliminate the burnt crumbly bits from attaching to the pizza. STILL, all in all, this is one of the top pizza places here in Santa Fe. It gets 3 stars for the pizza, only.
(3)Seibert M.
Very good pizza! The pizza is thin crust and crispy. There is a good selection of beverages alcoholic and non-alcoholic. That includes refreshing Italian sodas. To top it off the indoor and outdoor dining gives you some nice options.
(4)Snappy B.
Excellent thin crust pizza; we had the Greek and the Norm, both very good. A bit pricy, but I think in line with Santa Fe.
(4)Paul S.
Inept staff, sloppy housekeeping, dirty tables, self bussing, overpriced, pizza just OK. Im usually very up about our local places and I've been to this one before. If you are a local and you like it, good for you and them. $32 for a medium pizza and one glass of wine is too much...pizza margherita with added anchovies and tiny amount of spinach, 4 ounces of Pinot Grigiot is not worth $32 and you sure aren't paying for service or atmosphere. I was hoping for more or better...many better choices in Santa Fe for pizza.
(2)C. B.
Pizza was tasty but didn't blow my mind. Service was very poor. The guy who took our order bordered on rude, no salutation at all, just stared at us when we came up. 45 minute wait to get our pizza, have to walk up to the counter to get the inevitable second beer you will drink while you wait forever. And that's where I really got annoyed. Went to the counter, with my beer glass, waited 2-3 minutes while four employees who were anywhere from 4-10 feet away from me at any moment, not only didn't help me but very intentionally ignored me. Left my beer glass on the counter and walked out. Will not be back, the pizza ain't good enough to have that level of crap service.
(2)Jess C.
So far unimpressed, the beer is expensive and for the price we paid for 6 pesto rolls, you'd think the pesto would taste better. The garlic cheese rolls were better but biting into a chuck of raw garlic takes away from the over all enjoyment of them. The house made ranch leaves a lot to be desired. The pizza was the difference between 1 star and 3 stars. For a thin crust it was well made and tasted good. Over all, if someone else paid for it, I'd come back but I won't be spending my own money here again.
(3)Lee M.
The pizza was absolutely five star...maybe one of the top five pies I have ever had. The service is where the one star gets removed, making this a four star experience. And I hated to do that... We got there just before the rush started and still waited in a 15 minute line just to order. Because of the nature of the place, that is the only way to order...wait in line, get a number, sit and wait... We ordered the #2 (pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella and parmesan) and a Green Chile Chicken...both were sublimely good. The corn meal in the crust was a winner. However, it shouldn't take 45 minutes to get the two pies. Yes, there were a lot of orders, and yes they only have a single, 2 pie oven...but still, too long... So food = 5+ stars...service = 3 stars...total a borderline 4...
(4)Louann P.
We visited Backroad while on vacation a couple years ago, after having heard about it in DDD. Since we moved to Santa Fe earlier this month, it's become our neighborhood pizza joint and we feel fortunate to live so nearby.
(5)Yasmin S.
This is the southwest, not the east coast. Considering the context, this pizza is great!! Fun and easy place to go.
(4)Adriann A.
The star is for the beer! The Santa Fe Brewing Co Nut brown Ale was awesome, as was the not so local Angry Orchard Hard Cider. I wish i could say something positive about the pizza but I can't. Like many others have said it is like eating cardboard, or the nicer it's a cornmeal mess of a cracker. I was very disappointed, the places was packed, the service super super slow, to have horrible pizza.
(1)Anne K.
Love the pizza, not the service. No one was waiting and I stood there for five minutes before they would even acknowledge me. Then when I said something they were put out that I interrupted their important conversation. Great pizza, but not worth the hassle.
(2)Keith K.
I have been going to Back Road for several years but my last two pizzas were pretty bad. One was completely overloaded with ingredients and the other was burnt. We ate the burnt one, as we were hungry and didn't want to go through another long wait.
(3)John S.
got the chicken pizza with locan green chiles and is one of the best pizzas I've ever had. great flavor and combination of ingredients. liked the cornmeal on the bottom. 40 DDD places and counting and this is the best pizza so far.
(5)Pat M.
They don't explicitly list salt as a topping on the pizzas, but maybe they should... Seriously. It's actually pretty intense. Aside from that, it's pretty good pizza. Nothing to write home about, but it's okay. The cornmeal is nice. Often the edges of the pizza are blacker than I like. But then again... I guess I usually get it as takeout. The atmosphere of the restaurant itself is pretty nice. They have good beers on tap.
(3)Addyline L.
$8.50 lunch special, whoo-hoo! Salad, a slice, and a soda. Wonderful assortment of toppings you can put on anything, and a delicious salad with sunflower seeds. I'm happy to support this parlor not only because they have crunchy, light, cornmeal rolled crust but because they use local ingredients whenever possible. Local beer, and pool tables as well. I'm stoked to discover Back Road and a little embarrassed that I didn't find it sooner.
(5)Isaiah X.
Very surprised and satisfied with this joint. On vacation, placed an order for the Large Green Chili Pizza to go. Staff was very busy, yet kind, and put my pie together and then in the oven for what couldn't have been more than 15 mins. Brought dinner back to my family and we devoured that puppy! Loaded with big chunks of chicken, tons of feta, mushrooms, chilies, and who knows what other flavorful goodness. It was light, fulfilling, crisp, and not too spicy for my wife...happy family happy life.
(4)Nick S.
Liked it, like the patio, the workers the pie was a bonus. All fresh ingredients and thin crisp crust, makes for an easy lunch stop. I liked the crust and the flavor of the ingredients. Left feeling satisfied without feeling stuffed by a Huge slab of sauces and thick doughy crust in other nearby places. Didn't know it was cornmeal till I read a review. I guess I like it.
(4)Jacqueline B.
My family have been visiting from out of state and said we need to try this. So we drove from Albuquerque to Santa Fe just for this place. Not only was the pizza mediocre, but the staff was rude. We weren't sure what to get and as we were deciding, the guy at the register rolled his eyes at us, and sighed so loud we couldn't believe someone would do this, especially in front of us. Then we didn't know where the sugar, napkins or water was and they pointed to where it's at and just walked away. We won't be going over there again. We're better off doing Little Caesar's!
(1)Thatcher I.
I had the NM Pizza (green chilies, peperoni, red onions) and it was great. I love corn meal and so their cracker-like cornmeal crust was perfect for my tastes. We were there on a Sunday mid-afternoon so it was empty. Staff were nice and given that I have a food allergy and had to ask questions, they were excellent at providing the answers I needed (for your info, their sauce contains cheese). They were able to modify my pizza using olive oil instead of sauce (on their suggestion) and it worked great. It was difficult to find this place, as it is tucked away in a neighborhood against a railroad line and adjacent an apartment-looking office park. But it was cute and tasty. I won't lie, I wanted to go here because I love corn meal pizza crust and had gotten into that after watching Diners, Drive ins and Dives many years ago and just happened to recall they were in Santa Fe.
(4)R M.
I visited this place after seeing it on the Food Network and thought it was pretty good. I understand that the cornmeal crust might not be for everyone, but I found it to be a nice change. I recommend the Norm Pizza and the Cubano Roll. The homemade mustard sauce for the Cubano was unique. The service was also very good.

This is one of the few places with mediocre food to which I'll give four stars. I'm a recent Los Angeles transplant going to school in Santa Fe. Santa Fe is a weird place, and I'm always trying to find restaurants, bars and cafes that feel down to earth, relaxed and fun. Also, I love beer. I loved Back Road from the moment I walked in. The woman who took my order was friendly and charismatic. My boyfriend-person was raving about the pizza, so I was pretty excited. The pizza was pretty shitty, and I'm still confused about why he was raving about it. I'm guessing it's not his fault - he's from Arizona and I'm originally from Illinois, so Chicago deep dish is my core AND there's a lot of great pizza in LA, too. Fortunately, we got a 2-topping pizza and a pitcher of Sam Adam's from $15 [a Wednesday special]. Even more fortunately, we were drunk by the end of the pitcher, so the pizza got better and better. Fortunately, in a weird way, with red pepper, parmesan and F-ING SALT, the pizza [even sober] is eat-able. But, for real, I have never salted a pizza before. Also, the pizza took like 25+ minutes to cook. Nothing wrong there, it was pretty packed and I'm not very educated on pizza cooking time. The pizza tasted like nothing and the crust was absolutely nothing to write home about. We got sausage and spinach. BUT, I give this place four stars because I had an awesome time and everyone in the restaurant ALSO looked like they were having an awesome time. It was a great place to just kick it. I loved the decor, the games are fun and the weird red lighting was a good time. Great pizza is a plus, but when there's beer and pool, I can put pizza in the ambience category and just be glad it was there. I'll be back.
(4)Michael B.
We went here after seeing it on a re-run of the Food Network's Diners, Drive ins, and Dives. The pizza was ok, very thin trust with corn meal which was a nice change from what you usually get in this area. We got caught in a problem with a change over of beer kegs and the beer I was given with the pizza was flat. The tables were not clean, which would have been understandable if business had been heavy, but it was only moderate.

Pizza wasn't bad. Had the Santa Fe or New Mexico pizza, if it was better I probably would have remembered. My wife had the meatball sandwich. The bread was good and moist, but the meatballs were dry and inedible.

Back Road is within walking distance from the house and is open late, which in this town is hard to find! We ordered the special which included homemade italian sausage, pepperoni and mozzarella. The sausage was terribly dry and the crust of the pizza was not existent. I ended up with the corpse of an olive slice on my piece which caused my mouth to taste like fireplace ash for a few minutes. I wish the quality was better because the close proximity and neat patio would make this place a regular haunt.

These reviews are crazy!! Backroad Pizza is awesome... Anyone that says otherwise are being EXTREMELY finicky!! Go try the pizza! It's awesome... Local beers on tap, great teas, an AWESOME salad and yummy yummy pizza in a super fun atmosphere!

If it wasn't for that Obama hope poster, I might have given them 4 stars, but it was kind of a turn off while I was eating. Reviews are all over the map on this place, but I'd have to say I like the thin crispy crust & I built my own slice, so it was what I wanted. Nice fresh spinach salad, interesting homemade ranch dressing. Hubby's meatball sub on ciabatta was also quite tasty.

meh. I respect that Backroad is basically a Vic's Pizza (olympia, Wa) and i think the pizza is okay, but what bothers me the most is the lack of friendly staff. I remember when Winston worked there. He was awesome. James was pretty awesome too. But this newer crew is pretty pathetic. Also, who lets these hipsters pick the music? I have half a mind to call up EMI to send out a representative to see if Backroad is in proper compliance with public place music playback laws. I highly doubt it. How about this. I will refrain from reporting you if you promise to never EVER play dubstep again. I'm really serious. I will stop in randomly to check up.

I'm sad to see that there aren't more rave reviews on this place because it was the best pizza I've ever had. The crust was crispy, but not too thin, with plenty of gooey cheese. As if that wasn't enough, we also ordered the cheesy bread, which was great as well. The name does not lie; it is definitely on a back road and, since we were out-of-towners, it took a minute for us to find it. Well worth the trek, however.

Read glowing reviews about this place. Couldn't wait to try it. Sorry to say that pizza lacked pizzaz. Bland, no salt, no garlic, very little flavor. Small squares of mozzarella cheese dotted here and there that covered maybe 1/2 of pie. Sections of thin crust were burnt around the edges- not roasted, but jet black. Also ordered salad for vegan friend. Boring beyond words. Crostini bread w/ salad was hard as a rock, inedible. Italian sodas made with carbonated water from soda machine. Despite chosen syrup, still tasted like Dr. Pepper. I understand this pizza joint has strong following. Not sure what happened on the day we visited. Maybe new management or owners out of town for the holidays and staff doesnt care. Disappointing experience.

The sign says; "New York Pizza with a Santa Fe twist". OK, but remove the words New York. By Santa Fe standards, maybe. New York/New Jersey standards NO. I visited Backroad recently and upon entering at 6.30ish PM on a weekday noticed immediately the place could have used a good sweeping, both in front of and behind the counter. I ordered anyway since I wanted to try the brews from Santa Fe Brewing Co. I really wanted to enjoy the pizza but couldn't. I quickly took my pizza and went across the street to the very populated 2nd Street Brewery. Sorry Guy....

We were on our way back home from Taos and had to stop @ a triple D reviewed place. We wanted something different, so pizza it was. Wasn't hard to find via iPhone. We got a cheese pizza for the kids, boring, but the kids rated it excellent. Wife and got half the Norm and half feta, spinach and tomato. The crust was nice and crisp. The sausage on the Norm was very good. The spinach side was very good as well. Anything w/ feta, the wife will jump right in and I knew I had to grab a piece before she consumed her half. I will say if you order the fresh lemonade, be sure to try a sip before leaving the counter. I guess the taste tester was off the day we tried it. Very sour and bitter. Tried adding sugar, but still had to return it. My wife went to return it and got another drink, when a family @ a table asked if she just returned the lemonade. She said yes and the ones who had the lemonade also got up and returned theirs. I was also over charged on the order when I asked to make the Italian sub, just ham only. Lesson there is if you alter a menu item, make sure you check you total. They had a nice patio which we used. Check it out, very good pizza.

The food is good. The restaurant was empty and all the tables were dirty :( Good selection of toppings. Had a calzone which was good. The restaurant is a little load when people are playing pool upstairs. I will ahve to try the pizza sometime.

Took a weekend trip down to New Mexico to visit Momma's oldest daughter and her husband in Lab Land and I leveraged going with a swing through Backroad Pizza. We'd seen it on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives and their Bruschetta appetizer was a major inspiration on our own Bruschetta pizza that we make ourselves, so being in Santa Fe, we had to stop in. We weren't disappointed. The atmosphere of the room isn't anything special but its really about the food here. We ordered a bruschetta app, and garlic cheese roll, plus two small pies - The Gerald and The California. The bruschetta app was as good as we'd hoped and the garlic cheese roll got major marks from Momma's daughter. The pies were sort of New York style, thin and kind of crispy, with a sprinkle of cornmeal, giving it a light texture and a slightly sweet corn taste. It was definitely different, reminiscent of Two Boots Pizza in New York, but IMO much better than Two Boots. The Gerald was pretty tasty hot but a little wet in the center from the spinach and pesto. The couple of slices we took home ended up being a bit soggy, but still pretty tasty. Not sure we'd order this again. The California was really the hit here with the roma tomato slices, garlic, and feta cheese. Definitely worth having again. This jaded New Yorker says, 'pretty darn good pie for New Mexico'.

Pizza is very very good. Only thing I didn't like was a one refill for soda rule.

Guy fieri, you have redeem yourself...okay just a little. We had hoped to stop into El centro pizza, but since they were under renovation we decided to try back road pizza. . The location of this pizza joint is probably a local favorite to cyclists as there are two other restaurants in the area near railroad tracks and a sketchy neighborhood a few blocks later. To be honest, we didn't see anybody at Back Road so we went to the Brewery across the street. We stepped in the brewery and walked out because they only had 1 dusty 24" tv...now thats not adequate to watch college football on and instead we opted for a Pizza joint with a non functional TV that hasn't had cable for 6 years, as the guy says. :) LOL It was about noon on a Saturday and the place was dead. We ordered the pesto rolls, which was quiet nice. Pizza dough rolled out on cornmeal, topped with mozzarella cheese pesto sauce, rolled, and topped with sesame seeds. A nice appetizer for two people to share, approximately 6 pieces are served. Now for the pizza.... I think the show stopper for the pizza is actually the crust of the pizza since its made of cornmeal. The thin cornmeal crust gives a nice texture and crisp to the pizza. We ordered the Texan, which comes with red sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, and their homemade sausage. I wouldn't say their sauce and toppings would be something I would rave about, but if you like your pizza crispy then this would be a nice place to venture and try out.

Excellent Pizza and great Local Beers. I highly recommend trying this place. Also I saw they have a stage for live music. Although I've never seen anyone play. Pretty cool place.

Soon after ordering it became obvious that is is their policy to serve locals before tourists. We watched a couple of tables arrive 10 minutes after us and get their food 30 min before we did. It took over 20 min for our appetizer of bruschetta to arrive, that was really just a tiny pizza with tomatoes for topping. Once we finally got the dinner pizza, it was good--but nothing amazing and certainly not worth the wait.

Well it's name is Backroad Pizza and it should really stay on that backroad. It's honestly hard to even call this pizza. It was more along the lines of really crispy flatbread, with a wash of sauce (hardly detectable) and way too much cheese which had little to no taste. Really I shouldn't be rating this as pizza, seriously, and I'm not just being facetious. Everything about it was wrong. Maybe it was that I ordered by the slice rather than getting a whole pie, maybe. I really want to give them the benefit of the doubt only because I hear good things about them...that and the Guy Fieri video below really does make it look good. I inquired about the slices and what varieties they had on hand. The guy told me they've got cheese slices for $2.50 and they just add whatever toppings you'd like to it for $.75. I guess that should have been my first hint because it was as if the slices had been sitting there since lunch and it was now 5:30 PM. If my stale old slices weren't enough they then threw them in the oven for much too long. The chicken didn't even seem fresh either, it was a weird sort of half shredded half strip. There was no crust, it was more like a cracker. I want to stress that I'm not being overly harsh here, this is actually how it was. I know it seems like I'm nitpicking every single aspect, and how could everything be a disaster, but I promise you it was. On top of it all the staff were on their cell phones talking about their weekend plans and it took almost 15 minutes just to reheat my slices even though they weren't busy. The water was room temperature and no ice. As if it wasn't omen enough, the lighting was bad and I didn't even get good pictures. I ate about a third of each slice hoping for some redeeming qualities before tossing them in the trash, something I never do. Maybe your experience will be better and I sincerily hope so but as for me...I won't be coming back to the Backroad. They have two locations in Santa Fe and apparently at some point they had a third which is now closed but I don't know the circumstances. The only good thing that came from this excursion is that I hopped over to McDonald's and got two chocolate sundaes for $2.20 afterward....man do I love those! I have a more in-depth review and pictures on my personal blog.

Just discovered I don't like cornmeal pizza crust. Who thought of that? Crust was extremely thin and grainy. No yeast here. Tomato sauce was well seasoned and that's the only flavor that came through. Sausage was flavorless. No servers - you walk over to a shelf and put your own table setting together - didn't like that. The place is not clean. The only bathroom smells like urine. We've been traveling for a month and made this place a destination for dinner. What a disappointment. Can't wait to get home to a real pizza pie.

Very good. A friend told us about the place and it was spot on. Not a place that you were ever going to find unless you are looking for it. There was a local picking/jam session going on when we walked in that was fantastic! The gourmet pizza was very, very good!

I love pizza and this place does it right!!! Great slices. Great staff. Also, I love the sit down Ms Pacman and Galaga! Brings me back!

Unless you want to spend 20 bucks a person for one beer each and a medium mediocre pizza, and experience the absolute worst service imaginable, don't go there, as I did with my date the evening of October 5, 2010.

Excellent pizza, friendly people, good beer, reasonable prices.

The Pizza is really good! This was a nice spot for after a long hike, you gotta get your carbs back with a good place like this! We ordered the house salad which is a bed of greens, heaping tops of garbanzo beans, sunflower seeds and tomatoes.... we also ordered 'the Gerald' with pepperoni and it was delicious! (good to share between two people) The servings are great and the staff is very welcoming! You'll score because of the food and also the beer. They have Santa Fe Brewing Co. on Tap, and it is good! They also have a pool table upstairs. This place is chill and cozy! Kudos Santa Fe!

This place was a major letdown after seeing this on Triple D. When we entered, we were the only customers in the place. Most of the tables were dirty and had not been wiped down. The big TV on the wall didn't work. I've had my share of Chicago and NY style pizza over the years and this pizza did not stack up! They used to much corn meal in the dough. As an out of town visitor, this place is way over rated.

A nice, bright, modern-esque space in the 2nd Street enclave of Santa Fe. The day we went it wasn't busy at all. The lady who helped us wasn't too friendly. Not even a smile. She was all business. I have to say, the garlic cheese bread is excellent. So delicious! We also ordered a sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, olive pizza. It was very good, with a nice, crunchy, thin crust. Pretty solid ingredients all around. BUT...I think it's overpriced at $21 for a large pizza. I washed it down with a beer, which they have several of on draft. I had to get up from the table and go ask the pizza cook for a to-go box, because our server was sitting down, eating, with her back to us. Thinking he would bring it the 10 feet out to our table, I went and sat back down at the table. He wasn't having it. He set the box on the counter and told me, "There you go." Not a good staff. So, the breakdown: -Disinterested, borderline unfriendly staff -Excellent garlic cheese bread -Overpriced, fairly tasty pizza. Would I go back? Only for the bread.
